THE VILLAGE

As well as being one of the most important villages in the Asón Valley, Ramales is one of the area’s main tourist destinations. Surrounded by spectacular mountains, it offers a truly unique setting.

We also recommend visiting the Church of San Pedro, located in the main square next to the Town Hall, as well as the medieval bridge, just a five-minute walk from the village centre.

COVALANAS CAVE

The Cave of Covalanas is popularly known as the “Cave of the Red Deer”. It is located on the north-eastern slope of Mount Pando, above El Mirón Cave. It was discovered in 1903 by Father Lorenzo Sierra together with Hermilio Alcalde del Río, two key figures in Cantabrian archaeological research.

Its discovery marked a milestone in prehistoric science, particularly in the study of Paleolithic art, as it became the second cave with Paleolithic cave paintings discovered along Spain’s Cantabrian Coast after Altamira (1879).

CULLALVERA CAVE

Cullalvera Cave shows evidence of human occupation dating back to the Upper Paleolithic. The deepest cave paintings belong to the Magdalenian period and are around 13,500 years old.

Although the cave had long been known for its impressive size, the first prehistoric remains were discovered by Lorenzo Sierra in 1903. Its cave paintings were not identified until 1954. The action of water over thousands of years has shaped this spectacular cave into one of Cantabria’s most impressive natural wonders.

SOURCE OF THE ASÓN RIVER

The Asón River Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Cantabria, with an impressive drop of 70 metres. An easy walking route leads directly to the heart of the Collados del Asón Natural Park.

You can also visit the nearby viewpoint, which offers spectacular panoramic views of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape.
